MOSS 2007 – Step by Step – Table of Content

In this post we’ll create a machine WFE1, join it to dotnetscraps domain. Install IIS, SMTP and .NET 2.0

    Time to setup up a new machine – WFE1 – (Win 2k3 – R2 – SP2)!!!
Since this is just a copy/paste of the same VHD, we need to change the name of the machine and SID. There is a fix, although unsupported – read through the link carefully and don’t be hasty!! I am following this path, because I don’t have to ask for support (since this is just a demo) Winking. If you are following along, you are creating such a farm to do the same thing – i.e, LEARN!
Drag and Drop this newsid.exe to the new machine and run it. Rename the machine to WFE1. It will take some time to replace the existing SID with a Random SID.

Open WFE1 Settings. Select Networking –> Change Adapter 1 to Internal Network.

Click Start –> All Programs -> Control Panel –> Network Connections –> Local Area Connection

image

Click Properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.

     Change it to following…

image

Click on Ok, then click on Close.
At this point, you should have a machine with configuration as follows…

image

If you try pinging 10.0.0.1, you should be able to!
Let’s add this machine to the domain – dotnetscraps.
Select My Computer –> Properties –> Computer Name –> Change

 image

     Select Domain and type dotnetscraps
Provide user name (dotnetscraps\administrator) and password to join WFE1 machine to domain and hit enter. Wait for a while, and you should be greeted successfully. Click on Ok and restart when prompted.

     So we started with this…

    And now we have this…

image

Try to ping DC from command prompt in WFE1 and you should be able to see a response.

image

Let’s install IIS and .NET 2.0 on this machine.
Go to Control Panel –> Add Remove Programs –> Add Remove Windows Components.
Double click Application Server –> Check ASP.NET
Double click Internet Information Services –>  Check SMTP Service
Select Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and click Next.
Ensure that IIS is working fine by browsing any page. Once confirmed Shut down this machine – WFE1

Next step would be to make 2 more copies of this machine WFE1 (as WFE2 and AS) and get them on the same network. The idea is to get Network Load Balancing working for WFE1 and WFE2.

We will discuss about it in the next post. Stay tuned…
